SW201 The Field of Social Welfare and Social Justice

Registration Requirement: Acceptance into the Mental Health, Social Service and Addiction Counseling program; WR121 or WR121Z, and WR122 or WR122Z.
An introductory course covering the development of social welfare systems, social justice policies and fields of practice. Basic research skills in current social welfare issues are explored. Basic legislative processes as they relate to social welfare issues are explored.

- Develop an elementary understanding of researching to keep current in field of study through library and Internet research
- Analyze the social legislation process, social programs and funding sources for same
- Develop and demonstrate skills in grant writing and research for grants
- Develop objectivity when observing and analyzing the field of social welfare
- Develop team based skills while utilizing critical thinking skills pertaining to current research in the social welfare field
- Evaluate delivery of human services by social service agencies
- Examine programs and organizations through the context of a social systems
- Examine social welfare legislation, programs, policies and expenditures in the U.S.
- Examine the impact of current social problems on human service delivery systems
