RD090 Effective Reading and Learning Strategies

Registration Requirement: Placement in RD090 is based on the college reading segment of the college placement test (CPT).

This five-credit course provides instruction in reading comprehension skills for college-level materials, vocabulary development and study skills. Study skills instruction includes note taking, outlining, test-taking strategies, memory techniques and time management. Extensive outside reading is required.

RD115 Reading for College Success (Course offered online)

Credits 3Summer/Fall/Winter/Spring

Registration Requirement: RD090 and WR090, or IECC201R and IECC201W, each with a grade of "C" or better; or placement above stated course levels.

This three-credit course provides instruction in reading comprehension skills and vocabulary development for a variety of college-level materials, with an emphasis on identifying main ideas, major and minor supporting points in complex texts. Students are introduced to critical reading strategies, including identifying fact versus opinion, point of view and author's purpose. Techniques for varying reading rates are taught. Extensive outside reading is required.

RD117 Critical Reading (Course offered online)

Credits 3Summer/Fall/Winter/Spring

Registration Requirement: RD115; and WR090 or IECC201W; each with a grade of "C" or better; or placement above stated course levels.

This course provides instruction in advanced reading skills and vocabulary development. Emphasis is on improving higher-level comprehension skills and critical and analytical reading skills as they relate to college and life experience.
