NAX10 Basic Training: Nursing Assistants

Registration Requirement: Documented reading competency required (grade 9 or higher) or College Placement Test score of RD115 or higher. Note: Financial Aid is NOT available for this class unless taken as part of the Basic Health Care certificate program or the AGS in Health Professions Exploration degree. Admission into the Nursing Assistant class is facilitated through the Admissions and Records Office. Interested students should review the NA admissions requirements found on the MHCC web site at www.mhcc.edu or call 503-491-7506 to request the information to be mailed. Admissions evaluators signature is required for registration. This course is organized in compliance with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, Division 61, Oregon Administrative Rules.

This course is designed to provide students an opportunity to gain understanding of the nursing assistant role in healthcare agencies. Emphasis is on the personal qualities, knowledge and skills needed by the nursing assistant to give quality basic nursing care under supervision. Opportunity is provided to practice basic nursing skills and procedures under the supervision of the instructor. This course is organized in compliance with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, Division 61, Oregon Administrative Rules. Note: Financial Aid is NOT available for this class, and credit toward degree or certificate requirements is not awarded, unless taken as part of the Basic Health Care certificate or the AGS in Health Professions Exploration degree.

View Course Outcomes:

  1. Accurately complete a skills checklist in the laboratory and clinical setting as defined in the Oregon Nurse Practice Act.
  2. Accurately observe, report and record clients vitals signs and other physiological signs and symptoms as described in the Oregon Nurse Practice Act.
  3. Demonstrate ability to provide personal care as defined by the Oregon Nurse Practice Act and as directed by a licensed nurse.
  4. Demonstrate appropriate infection control measures and standard precautions in all lab and clinical activity.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to personalize care while taking into consideration disease process, level of function and life stage, while under the supervision of a licensed nurse.
  6. Demonstrate therapeutic and professional communication when interacting with clients, families and other health care team members.
  7. Demonstrate use of safety and emergency procedures in all client care activities.
  8. Discuss legal and ethical aspects of the nursing assistant role as defined in the Oregon Nurse Practice Act.
  9. Provide for client's nutrition and hydration needs as directed by licensed personnel.

NAX13 Nursing Assistant 2

This course is designed to assist students who hold a current unencumbered CNA 1 certification in enhancing their skills and improving their hiring potential. Students who successfully complete this course will then hold CNA 2 title. Students will learn important health related information as well as skills that are required by the Oregon State Board of Nursing.

  1. Apply the skills that are presented and organize care for the person receiving care.
  2. Apply the skills they learn related to communication using active listening, reflecting and rephrasing in a variety of clinical situations.
  3. Demonstrate and articulate the nursing skills and evaluate their performance as well as the performance of their peers.
  4. Explain the choices they made in formulating their decisions as it relates to the plan of care.
  5. Identify and restate techniques used to reduce stress and how to use these strategies to choose a work environment that enhances quality of life for both care giver and patient.
  6. Identify different manifestations of pain and verbalize a report of pain that will allow the person being cared for to feel that their needs have been addressed.
  7. Identify from, scenarios and lists, normal and abnormal patters and changes in finding related to a patient/resident as it relates to their health care situation.
