Sterile Processing Technicians process, store, and distribute medical and surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment for operating rooms and other areas of hospitals and healthcare facilities. They understand and apply principles and methods of sterilization and infection control. This course provides instruction for students who wish to function in entry-level positions in Central Service and Sterile Processing departments of healthcare facilities. Based on the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) curriculum, the course is designed for students who wish to obtain certification for Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST). This video depicts the role of a Sterile Processing Technician.

The course includes 60 hours of didactic instruction and 30 hours of lab instruction.

Please note: 400 hours of hands-on experience verified by employer is also required for eligibility for the IAHSCMM exam. This course does not fulfill that requirement.

Prerequisites

  • RD090 and WR090, each with a grade of "C" or better; or placement above stated course levels.
  • Must be physically able to lift heavy instrument trays.
  • Good verbal communication skills required.
  • High school diploma or GED may be required for employment.

Note: Financial Aid is NOT available for this class unless taken as part of the Basic Health Care certificate program or the AGS in Health Professions Exploration degree.
